It looked like Leeds had suffered a major blow early in this John Player Trophy Semi Final at Bolton when prop Lee Crooks left the field with a dislocated shoulder after just four minutes. Wigan had taken the lead with a 24th Minute try by Steve Hampson but five minutes later, Hampson made an error that allowed Paul Medley to score for 6-6, which carried until half time. Leeds chipped into a lead second half with a Ray Ashton drop goal for 7-6, but it was a Garry Schofield try just after the hour that took Leeds away from Wigan at 13-6. The tie was only settled with a last minute effort from Colin Maskill. Wigan coach Graeme Lowe afterwards was questioned on the decision to play youngsters Ian Lucas, Martin Dermott and Ian Gildart in such a major Semi Final.
