Wigan were playing their first league match since 1st November and started slowly on this visit to Castleford. They had a lot of defending in the first quarter and by the 21st Minute, Cas had built an 8-0 lead with a penalty and conversion from Bob Beardmore either side of a try from his twin brother Kevin. Wigan would get back to 8-6 before half time with first a penalty from Joe Lydon and then an unconverted try by Andy Goodway. The second half remained tight with Bob Beardmore hitting a penalty for 10-6 but a try from Graeme West, again unconverted, got Wigan back to 10-10. It looked like they had taken the lead with a Joe Lydon try after that but it was brought back for a foot in touch. Instead Bob Beardmore kicked a third penalty goal and that proved enough for a slender 12-10 Castleford victory.
