I thought that was a good night of Rugby League. Leigh did
themselves proud I thought whilst I was pleased to see Wigan
produce a good score whilst trying out some other options.
Blake Green, Mike McIlorum and Liam Farrell being rested we saw Sam
Powell start at Stand Off with Logan Tomkins at Hooker. Jack Hughes
started in the second row whilst George Williams and James
Greenwood were given debuts off the subs bench.
Leigh started well with a drop out forced on the opening set of
the match but Wigan's first attack up the other end saw Josh
Charnley go over in the right corner, Pat Richards couldn't convert
leaving the score at 4-0.
Wigan scored three more tries, all helped by conceded penalties,
with Leigh not touching the football. Richards scored twice either
side of a try for Sam Tomkins and with all three converted it was
22-0 after just 14 minutes.
That looked really ominous for Leigh but again when they had the
ball they looked pretty decent and got a nice try themselves on 17
minutes when Rob Parker crashed over, taking advantage of a couple
of good offloads. Easy conversion made it 22-6.
James Greenwood came on to make his debut but it was the 31st
minute before Wigan scored again with Sam claiming his second try,
conversion by Pat failed - 26-6.
Then George Williams replaced Sam Powell in the halves who in
turn switched to hooker to replace the interchanged Logan Tomkins.
Right on half time Williams provided the pass that got Jack Hughes
on the break away and Sam was in support to claim his hat-trick.
Conversion by Pat made it 32-6 at the break.
Into the second half and Wigan scored within 45 seconds of the
restart. Matty Smith with the half break down the right but the
supporting Charnley had the pace to get over under the posts and
Pat's conversion made it 38-6.
Leigh should have scored up the other end soon after than but
the player who had burst through superbly managed to knock on over
the line. The Leigh fans were incensed but from my view it was
quite clear. Great defence by Wigan to not give up on that.
Up the other end a 40/20 from Smith gave us the opportunity to
score again and Richards claimed his hat-trick and then converted
for 44-6. That was followed quickly by a fourth try for Sam,
another easy kick making it 50-6.
Then Charnley made it a hat-trick of hat-tricks with his third
on 55 minutes. Good break down the right and clever again to round
it off nearer the sticks, but Pat's conversion here was a woeful
one - 54-6. On the hour Charnley was then the provider to send
George Williams in for a debut try and an easy kick for Pat made it
The last 20 minutes is where Leigh should be most proud. Wigan
never scored again after the hour mark. Baring in mind at Hull KR
we registered a 42-0 score line in the final twenty minutes of that
match, this was some achievement for the part time side. In fact
they scored themselves. Bit dubious I thought but you get rewarded
I think for hard work and Ryan Brierley and his side had earned
their second try with three minutes to go. Conversion missed
leaving the final score at 60-10. Wigan progressing into the 5th
Round Draw which is on Monday at 3:30pm.
