Summary:l

Wigan enjoyed a great victory in the season curtain raising Charity Shield match over on the Isle of Man but trouble was brewing off the field. They had announced the signing of New Zealand prop Adrian Shelford but St Helens were claiming he'd sign a contract to join them from July 1st. Saints claimed they had sent an £11,500 cheque to the New Zealand League but Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay counter claimed that they'd "done nothing illegal" because he'd never signed a contract with Saints. The net result was Shelford eventually joined Wigan but it would be dragged through court before he could debut.
