Summary:l

Halifax had won the Challenge Cup Final the previous weekend and they set about the task of adding the Premiership in good fashion. They scored the only try of a tight first half with Gary Stephens sending Graham Eadie over. Colin Whitfield missed the conversion but later added a penalty for 6-0. Wigan responded early second half with tries from Andy Goodway, Joe Lydon and Steve Hampson but all three went unconverted, so the lead was just 12-6. Those extras being missed looked costly when Scott Wilson responded for Halifax on 57 minutes but Whitfield missed this time to leave Wigan 12-10 up. It was only in the 75th Minute than Wigan sealed the match with Ellery Hanley's burst up the middle being finished by David Stephenson, who added the extras this time for an 18-10 lead that would not be dented.
