This was the final match of the 1986-1987 season in which
Wigan had won the title with four matches to spare. They chose to give a
debut to Dave Beswick at Stand Off but it was a light effort with Ellery
Hanley's hat-trick coming in a 15 minute spell. The victory did mean Wigan
beat St Helens to the First Division points scoring record with 941 (an
average of 31.3 per match). Saints finished with 935 points. Perhaps more
impressive was Wigan's defence that conceded just 193 points (an average of
just 6.4 conceded per match).
