Summary:
This was a 1st v 2nd contest but Wigan had already
cantered easily to the title and were 11 points clear of Saints in 2nd
place. So rather than what could of been a title decider it was a match in
which Saints rested ten players ahead of their forthcoming Challenge Cup
Final against Halifax at Wembley. Phil Veivers, Paul Loughlin, Mark Elia,
Kevin McCormack, Brett Clark, Neil Holding, Tony Burke, Graham Liptrot, Andy
Platt and Chris Arkwright all played at Wembley, but were absent here.
Despite that, Saints competed well to lead twice during the first half with
Wigan being disrupted by the loss of Shaun Edwards to a knee ligament injury
in the 16th Minute. But a Ellery Hanley double helped Wigan to recover into
an 18-12 lead by half time and they won the second half 30-0.
