Tries: Paddy Kirwan
Goals: Mick Burke 3

The cup had already lost favourites Warrington, who had lost to Bradford, but few expected second favourites Wigan to exit at the hands of relegation battling Oldham. Paddy Kirwan's try in stoppage time made it 8-8 and Mick Burke's simple conversion gave Oldham the shock win. Wigan though perhaps only had themselves to blame with Andy Gregory conceding a two point penalty and being sin binned for mouthing off late in the first half. Those two points ultimately proved the difference.

Half Time:

Oldham 4 Wigan 0

Referee:  Ken Spencer (Warrington)
