Playing in the John Player Trophy Final and Challenge Cup
Preliminary Round had left Wigan lame in the league for three weeks since
they had played Widnes on 4th January. Warrington had gone clear top the
weekend prior to this game and held on to their lead with a 24-18 away
victory over fourth placed Castleford on this afternoon. Wigan and Saints
both won to maintain the pressure but Wigan did it hard at Hull KR with Joe Lydon, Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards and Andy Goodway all backing up 24 hours
after playing for Great Britain against France at Headingley. David
Stephenson and Henderson Gill also played in the Test but didn't play here.
Wigan's win was based on a good first half and solid defence.
