Mark Forster

Warrington had beaten Wigan both home and away in the league, so they were perhaps the favourites for this John Player Final played at Bolton Wanderer's Burnden Park ground. Henderson Gill had scored to give Wigan the lead but Mark Forster levelled up with a reply for Warrington, neither try being converted for 4-4. That score remained until half time. After the break it began to fall apart for Warrington with the loss of hooker Kevin Tamati with hamstring trouble being a contributing factor. Wigan kicked on after the break with a second try from Henderson Gill being added to with one from Andy Goodway that make it 14-4. Dean Bell's try came in the last minute. Later, the RFL were not happy with the television coverage of this final offered by the BBC. The broadcaster missed the first six minutes of the second half televising a horse race from Ireland. They also ignored the trophy presentation entirely and disrupted the pre match entertainment to interview Great Britain coach Malcolm Reilly, yet didn't end up showing that interview anyway!
