Summary:l

This was a tough draw for Wigan to start their defence of the John Player Special Trophy they had won against Hull KR the previous season. It couldn't have started any better with Andy Goodway scoring one of the trophies fastest ever tries when crossed the line after just 20 seconds but the try was unconverted and Leeds would take the lead when Ian Wilkinson scored in the corner and Mark Conway converted off the touchline. Wigan re-took the lead before half time though with Ellery Hanley's 20th try of the season so far but again the conversion was missed so the lead was only 8-6. Wigan kicked on to win easily after the break with four more tries scored and Leeds only try coming in the final ten minutes when the tie was beyond them.
