The first silverware of the season was up for grabs with
Wigan meeting Oldham in the Grünhalle Lager Lancashire Cup Final at Knowsley Road in St
Helens. It had been a tight opening half hour with no scoring until Oldham
took a shock lead with a great burst from Bruce Clark sending Gary Bridge
over for a try in which David Hobbs converted for 6-0. Henderson Gill
quickly kicked a penalty to reduce that lead to 6-2 but Wigan poached the
lead just before half time with a try from Mike Ford, which was converted by
Gill. Wigan went on to dominate after the break with a brace of tries from
Shaun Edwards being added to with one from Joe Lydon, who also kicked a drop
