Match Preview: Huddersfield (A) - 16th February 2013 at John Smiths Stadium

Huddersfield Giants v Wigan Warriors - Super League 18 Round 3.
Saturday 16th February 2013. Kick Off 3:00pm at John Smiths Stadium.

Match Preview

I made the point in my match report last weekend how Warrington's side last weekend included EIGHT players older than the oldest squad member of our squad Pat Richards. It's a stat that highlights our inexperience, and for that reason this fixture is another intriguing test for our side.

It's alright to raise your game for playing against Warrington but I'm really intrigued to see if Wigan can now back that up against another big pack in Huddersfield.

They annihilated St Helens in the opening match of the season and are bound to be well up for the battle against Wigan, considering it's Stuart Fielden's first match against us since he left. I've no doubt he will be relishing this contest. Think back five years to 2007 and he scored twice for us on his first return to Odsal. Ok we lost that match but he only ever scored one further try during his 141 appearances.

Add in Eorl Crabtree and big Tongan Ukuma Ta'ai and they are going to provide a massive test for the likes of Scott Taylor, Gil Dudson and Greg Burke.

The Giants have consistently been in the top half of the table for the past four seasons, yet never ever looked like title contenders, and for me it was the pack depth that often let them down.

Wigan have won each of their last three visits to play Huddersfield and the games all seemed to follow the same pattern. An excellent competitive first 20-30 minutes but once the interchanges began to take effect, Wigan took control of the contests. They particularly fell away in intensity when Crabtree left the field I felt, so it'll be interesting to see if they've bridged that gap.

If they have then it'll be a tough ask to keep Danny Brough quiet for 80 minutes. When he is on his game he is awesome, but he needs his pack to be on top to be able to do us damage.

Not much else to say really. Its another good test of our expectations for the season ahead. and I'm looking forward to see if our lads can pass that test. A good win here and perhaps we can start aiming our expectations high for the rest of the year? We shall see!
