Goals: John Woods 3

Wigan and Bradford came into this game with 100% records for the league season so far. The match was played at Odsal a day after the ground had hosted the football derby between Bradford City and Leeds United in which Leeds fans had rioted, injuring a policeman, and set fire to a fish and chip stall. The Sickest case of hooliganism at a time when Bradford City were forced to play at Odsal following the terrible fire at their Valley Parade ground just over a year earlier that had seen 56 supporters burnt alive and injured 265 more. 60 arrests had occurred on the Saturday but the ground was declared fit for the rugby on the Sunday and Wigan had to work hard to maintain their winning start to the season. Tries from Henderson Gill and Ian Potter helped them into a 10-4 half time lead but Bradford hit back with a try from Mal Graham early in the second half. The match was level for a long while before late tries from Joe Lydon and Steve Hampson got Wigan home.
