Had Halifax slipped up in their final league game on the Sunday, Wigan were ripe
to clinch the title on points difference in their final game of the season
at Oldham but Halifax didn't slip up in gaining the point they needed to be
crowned champions. After Wigan had won this end of season nothing to play
for game they were left to reflect on what might have been. To finish second
after four defeats out of their first five games was actually quite an
achievement but they blew a big opportunity to win their first title since
1960 with five points dropped in three games around Easter, including one at
the hands of Oldham.
