Summary:

Referee Robin Whitfield had not officiated a Wigan match since 4th January 1981, until this game, because his brother Colin had been playing for the club. However he had been sold a month before to Halifax, so Robin was free to referee Wigan games again. In this Challenge Cup Tie, cup holders Wigan had to come from behind to progress past Saints. Brett French had opened the scoring for Saints but Wigan levelled with a try from Steve Ella soon after. Neither try was converted so it was just 4-4 until Saints took a half time lead after Roy Haggerty's pass sent Mark Elia away and he rounded Steve Hampson to make it 10-4 at half time after Sean Day converted. Into the second half and Wigan had come gone from six down to six up within ten minutes after David Stephenson scored twice and converted both. The second try was an interception one for a 16-10 Wigan lead. Steve Hampson then made it 20-10 with a try on 64 minutes Saints didn't give up and hit back to 20-14 with an unconverted try from Shaun Allen but Wigan sealed progression with the try of the game with five minutes to go. Shaun Edwards, Stephenson and Henderson Gill all got a touch before Ellery Hanley raced clear to finish.
