The week before this game had seen Widnes sell Joe Lydon to Wigan for £100,000. The decision prompted the resignation of coach Eric Hughes and he was quickly replaced by Doug Laughton. He'd made an impressive start with them beating previous league leaders Halifax the week before and to add the scalp of Wigan here was quite significant because Wigan had gone 20 matches unbeaten since September 29th. Widnes' home game against Castleford had been the only game to beat the frost the previous Sunday and they'd used it to go top of the table.  Wigan had matches in hand but they really needed to win this and their failure saw them fall behind. Widnes had led 10-0 at half time, after tries from Paul Hulme and Mike O'Neill. That score carried until the 65th Minute when Graeme West scored to make it 10-6. However in the 72nd Minute, Tony Myler and Paul Hulme combined to send Darren Wright in for the match clinching try.
