Summary:l

The John Player Semi Final draw saw Wigan get Second Division leaders Leigh in a tie that was to be played at Knowsley Road in St Helens. It proved to be an afternoon of few worries for Wigan as they saw off Leigh with relative ease. Wigan quickly built up a 12-0 lead with tries from Aussies Steve Ella and Greg Dowling but Phil Johnson's try reduced the lead to 12-4. Before Half Time though a second try from Greg Dowling would have Wigan 18-4 in front. It was a bit of a shock early second half with first Phil Fox scoring to reduce the lead to 18-8 before Colin Whitfield was sent off for a high tackle on Rob Henson. But even with 12 men Wigan recovered to kick on despite increasingly muddy conditions. Just as BBC Commentator Ray French remarked at how "ineffective" Ellery Hanley had been he was sent under the sticks for 24-8 and that finished Leigh off. Late in the game, Nicky Kiss scored for 30-8 before Dowling completed his hat-trick and the 36-8 win. After the game, Wigan announced the signings of South Africans Rob Louw and Ray Mordt which full parade for the South African SABC film crew in attendance.
