This John Player Quarter Final tie was a repeat of the Lancashire Cup Final two months earlier and the BBC chose it to showcase to their Grandstand audience. Warrington took the lead with a try from Paul Bishop, to which he converted himself for 6-0. Wigan did response next with Steve Ella putting Henderson Gill in the corner for 6-4 but Warrington doubled their tally with Andy Gregory's delayed pass saw Les Boyd break to send Phil Blake under the posts. That was in the 29th Minute and Warrington began to look to consolidate that lead to half time but three minutes before the interval, Wigan narrowed the gap. After a dropout had been forced, Ella produced some sweet feet to offload and send Ellery Hanley over near the posts for a 12-10 half time score.

Warrington had been much the better side but six minutes after the interval, Wigan took the lead for the first time. Ella put the kick out and after a good knock back by Mike Ford, he eventually re-gathered to send the looping round Ella in the left corner. Four minutes later Gill claimed his second try but failure from David Stephenson to convert either score left the lead at just 18-12. After Bishop had reduced the lead with a penalty, the Wigan lead would increase further on 57 minutes when Ian Potter forced his way over and Stephenson converted this time for 24-14. That looked a good enough lead to see Wigan through but Warrington never gave up and a Rick Thackray try got the score back to 24-20 before a Bishop penalty made it 24-22. Thirteen minutes still remained and although Wigan added a penalty goal for 26-22 with seven minutes to go, they would have to sweat it out until the hooter.
