Tries: Brian Johnson
Goals: Brian Carbert 2
On a lovely sunny day at St Helens, Wigan took
the lead in this Lancashire Cup Final with a David Stephenson penalty goal
but that was quickly responded to by a Brian Carbert penalty for 2-2. The
first try would fall to Warrington though with Andy Gregory sending Brian
Johnson racing to the try line from a scrum that was 20 metres from their
own line. Carbert converted for an 8-2 Warrington lead. Wigan though would
respond in the ten minutes before half time with Nicky Kiss scoring from
close range and a great try by Steve Ella right on the hooter helping the
score to 12-8 in their favour.
After David Stephenson had kicked a penalty
goal for 14-8, the 52nd Minute brought a key moment when Warrington
loose forward Alan Rathbone was sent off by referee John Holdsworth for a
late hit on his opposite number Ian Potter. Then in a double blow for
Warrington they conceded a try from their own attack. Paul Cullen put a kick
up which was superbly collected by Colin Whitfield. He should of been
tackled right on the try line but broke out of Carbert's tackle and with 60
metres to go he sent Ella racing for his second try. That made it 20-8 and
Warrington disintegrated from then on. Ellery Hanley and Shaun Edwards added
further tries whilst Warrington finished the game with 11 men after Andy
Gregory was sent off 9 minutes from time after stamping on Nick Du Toit.
