This match marked the beginning of the tour for New
Zealand and it would also be the full debut of Steve Ella for Wigan. The
only try of the first half came when David Stephenson sent Shaun Edwards
over and he added three goals for a 10-2 lead with a Vaun O'Callaghan
penalty being the only response from the tourists. Edwards would turn from
hero to villain just three minutes after the re-start when his error, not
helped by the wet weather, gifted Shane Cooper a score for 10-8. New Zealand
put the pressure on but a superb kicking game from Ella offered regular
relief and it was from one of his kicks that O'Callaghan made an error and
Andy Goodway pounced to score from a kick ahead towards the try line.
Stephenson converted for 14-8 and that's how it would finish.
