Summary:l

On the Monday prior to this visit of Widnes, Wigan had completed the signing of Ellery Hanley from Bradford Northern. Wigan spent £85,000 on Hanley with both Phil Ford and Steve Donlan moving to the Odsal club.. A massive crowd turned up for the contest but the match would not just be remembered for Hanley's debut, but also because both Widnes' Steve Rogers and Steve O'Neill suffering broken legs during the game. Rogers, a former Australian international centre, was actually making his Widnes debut on a winter contract from Cronulla until 31st March, but the leg break in the 13th Minute proved to be so bad that it actually ended his playing career!

Amongst all the Hanley's hype, it was perhaps easy to forget that Wigan started the game bottom of the table having lost all three of their opening league games. After a slow start, Wigan had built up a 10-0 lead at half time but Widnes began to look visibly shaken when the second broken leg incident occurred just after half time. That helped Wigan push on with Hanley, getting cheered every time he touched the ball, sending Mike Ford over for one try. The score had been at 26-0 before Widnes found two consolation tries in the 75th and 77th minute but that still left time for Jimmy Fairhurst to score and wrap up Wigan's first league win of the campaign.
