Saints had humbled Wigan at Central Park in the
Lancashire Cup Final two months earlier but now Wigan had their own Aussie
superstar to match Mal Meninga in the form of Brett Kenny. Saints were top
of the table with Wigan one of the sides chasing them down, so it was a
crucial match. Kenny had opened the
scoring but Saints hit back with a try from Peter Gorley. By Half Time
Saints held a slender 16-14 lead but Wigan were superior after the break
with tries from Henderson Gill and Graeme West putting Wigan into a 26-16
lead after two conversions from Whitfield. Saints made Wigan sweat when
Meninga scored a try and a conversion from Holding brought the score back to
26-22 with nine minutes to go. However, Ian Potter sealed the win with
two minutes to go and Wigan took the Christmas spoils home with them.
