Summary:

Wigan met Second Division York in the Challenge Cup Semi Finals, at Elland Road in the Leeds, looking to reach their first final since 1970. The game though was played in constant rain with a waterlogged pitch making it quite a battle. Only penalty goals were scored first half with two Colin Whitfield penalties being split by one for York's Graham Steadman. Whitfield then claimed the games first try three minutes after the interval when his grubber towards the try line was fumbled and he pounced. Conversion was missed but Mick Scott's close range try in the 56th Minute gave Wigan a huge step towards Wembley at 14-2. That score carried for the next twenty minutes but four minutes from time, Harrison scored for York and the conversion from Steadman left Wigan sweating to the end at 14-8. They hung on to great joy for the supporters.
