Summary:
This looks like a comfortable Wigan win in the end but it
was far from it. On a heavy pitch and in pouring rain Wigan, having led 4-1
at half time, were now losing 7-4 and looking resigned to defeat before up
stepped substitute John Pendlebury to score. The irony was the bench were
just about to substitute him off the field but David Stephenson had sent
Shaun Edwards (playing on the wing) on the break away from deep in in his
own half. Support play came from Henderson Gill, Mark Cannon, Brian Case and
Wayne Elvin before Pendlebury finished off in the right corner. The try had
come from nothing, Wigan had looked a beaten side and bogged down on a heavy
muddy pitch miles from the try line, but Whitfield's conversion had
now put them 10-7 ahead and in these conditions that was a big lead! Mark
Cannon added another try late to send Wigan into the Challenge Cup Semi
Finals for the first time since they last reached Wembley in 1970!
