Summary: 

This was the first derby played under the new Four Point per Try rules brought in at the start of the season. The first four point derby try went to Saints' Peter Gorley with two goals from Steve Rule only being responded to by three penalty goals from Colin Whitfield for Wigan before half time. Whitfield levelled the score up at 8-8 with a fourth penalty before scoring a try to seal a 12-8 victory. The win took Wigan above Saints in the table.
