Andy Gregory was absent for Widnes after a fall out with their coach Vince Karalius but this was still a tough ask for Wigan away at the league leaders in the John Player Trophy. Widnes looked home and dry at 20-7 but youngster Shaun Edwards was causing problems all second half and when Graeme West scored, Wigan had great hope at 20-15. Wigan though bombed a late try to potentially nick the game with the conversion after David Stephenson delayed his pass to Brian Juliff too long.
