On 16th March, Leeds had topped the league table with 35 points but they amazingly only took three points from their last ten on offer to fall all the way down to sixth place in the end. It had been a shocking finish and their season had ended in total disgrace with a 51-2 loss at Leigh the previous Sunday. Now in the fresh start of the Premiership Trophy, things looked ominous for Leeds when Wigan quickly found a 5-0 lead with a 4th Minute converted try to Martin Foy but the visitors chipped back with two penalty goals before Conway was sent in by Heron for a 23rd Minute try that put them 9-5 ahead. Whitfield halved that deficit before the interval with a penalty. Wigan couldn't find a try to hit back and although Whitfield kicked a goal, Conway kicked one also and a drop goal from Holmes sent Leeds through 12-9. For having been so close to the title, this was a further disappointment for Wigan to exit the Premiership so early but once you forgot all the recent title chase drama, it was worth remembering the John Player Trophy success in January had been Wigan's first trophy won since 1973/74.
