Wigan entered the final round of the 1982/83 season with
title hopes still alive but they needed to win and hope a points difference
swing of 45 or more occurred against rivals Hull who were playing at home to
Barrow. News would have quickly filtered through that the chances were never
on with Hull easing to an 18-3 half time lead. Wigan also were 14-7 down at
the break to Widnes anyway and although they fought back second half, they
would lose to make Hull's 31-13 success irrelevant. Worst still for Wigan,
the loss meant they actually finished the season in third place.
