On the Friday prior to this contest, Wigan's two title rivals met each other
in front of 20,569. Hull beat Hull KR 21-3 at The Boulevard but Wigan
perhaps would have prefered for a Rovers victory because they had a straight
fight on points difference with them. That derby victory was effectively
Hull's game in hand on Wigan and they used it to go a point clear of them.
Two days later on this Sunday, Hull were playing again but they practically
had a bye against a Carlisle side that had won just 2 of 27 matches in the
season so far. They won 27-4 as expected and so all Wigan could do is keep
winning and hope they slipped up in their two remaining games. They got the
job done here against Oldham in a tough match that was played in "vile" rainy conditions.
Despite the importance of the fixture, Alex Murphy had no hesitation in
giving a debut to
rookie Mike Ford at Scrum Half. A try from Dennis Ramsdale in the 14th
Minute settled Wigan down at 5-0 with Parrish getting two points back with a
penalty in the 32nd Minute. The only points second half came after just
three minutes with a penalty from Whitfield completing the scoring at 7-2.
Hull KR also backed up their Friday clash with a game against Warrington but
their 9-9 draw meant their title bid was over.
