Hull had slipped up by losing 21-16 at Castleford on Easter Monday, so a massive opportunity was opened up for Wigan who knew that if they won this Wednesday Night fixture against Warrington 14 points or more, they'd go top of the table. They fell just four points short of that target but still produced a great win against Warrington. Like against Hull the previous midweek, Wigan had to battle an early loss to injury when Colin Whitfield departed with a gashed eye after just three minutes. Shaun Wane replaced him at full back and his inexperience in that position was soon exposed with Ronnie Duane dribbling round him for a try that made it 3-0. Wigan soon responded though with two penalty goals putting them 4-3 ahead by the 20th Minute before David Stephenson's try in the 34th Minute gave Wigan a 7-3 half time lead. Soon after half time, Stephenson scored again for 10-3 but the match was only settled in the 68th Minute when Nicky Kiss scored and Henderson Gill tagged on the extras by kicking his first goal for the try. Wigan couldn't find further points to go top of the table but they would still be delighted by being joint top with three games to play.
