This was a huge game in the title race with the winners guaranteed to go top of the table. Wigan's chances though suffered a massive blow early with prop Glyn Shaw suffering a broken leg after just two minutes. Four minutes later, Crooks opened the scoring for Hull and later he was very lucky not to be sent off after flattening Jimmy Fairhurst. Crooks was sin binned but Hull survived then found a try from Leuluai to make it 6-0. Wigan got back into the game just before half time when Danny Campbell broke to find John Pendlebury who sent Henderson Gill in. 6-3 was the half time score.

The second half was totally dominated by Hull. Tries from Harkin, Evans, Edmonds and O'Hara was only responded to by one for Dennis Ramsdale by Wigan. Ramsdale also left the field later in the game with concussion, so the night was a bitter one for Wigan.
