Leeds began this match leading the league table but the
truth was that their title bid had been crumbling in recent weeks. Wigan's
momentum was going the other way and they started brightly in this key match
with Jimmy Fairhurst's offload sending full back Barry Williams over. Colin
Whitfield converted for 5-0. Wigan's discipline soon let them down and they
helped Leeds come back with a try from Kevin Rayne, and conversion from
Kevin Dick, tying the game up at 5-5. Whitfield would restore a Wigan lead
before half time with a penalty. The game was described as untidy but
Fairhurst's try in the 49th Minute took Wigan to 12-5. That score took for a
while until Dick fouled Whitfield off the ball in the 69th Minute and
Whitfield dusted himself down to kick a penalty for 14-5 and with Dick's
frustration soon seeing him sin binned, he kicked another penalty for 16-5.
Wigan then wrapped up the win, against the 12 men, with Henderson Gill's try
for a final score of 19-5. Elsewhere, both Hull clubs won to takeover 1st
and 2nd in the league table but Saints charge behind Wigan was halted by
losing to Hull.
