Summary:l |
Having been postponed at Christmas, Central Park was
hosting its first derby in two and a half years since Boxing Day 1979. This
was also the first time a league derby between the sides was contested on a
Sunday Afternoon. Results of games elsewhere had already ensured Wigan
wouldn't be relegated and they finished the 1981/82 season absolutely
rampaging over Saints with the score line
looking closer than it was because only one of the eight tries were
converted. Meanwhile, at the top of the table Hull and Widnes were meeting
each other and Hull's 21-3 victory on this day saw them go top. Leigh though
still had a game in hand and on the following Wednesday they sweated past
bottom of the table Whitehaven to win their first title in 76 years with a
13-4 win at the Recreation Ground. |
