A tough draw for Wigan against the current cup holders and league leaders Widnes. An even tougher task with both Glyn Shaw (suspension) and Alan Hodkinson (injured) absent from the front row. Wigan started superbly though with a penalty from Colin Whitfield being added to with a try from Mal Aspey, a former 535 appearance record top try scoring Widnes legend, making it 7-0 after just 12 minutes. Widnes though kept calm and by half time led 9-7 after Eddie Cunningham scored against his former Wigan club and John Myler kicked three goals. Amazingly no further scoring occurred second half. Considering Wigan already had front row absentees, they lost both replacement props John Trundle and Geoff Cunliffe late in the game and had a limping Henderson Gill also during the second half.
