Wigan had suffered a hammer blow to their relegation hopes two nights before this fixture after Workington had beaten Leeds 16-9 at Derwent Park. With only five games left (including this Good Friday game), Wigan realistically needed to win at least four of them. Despite giving their all against the enemy in this derby, it wasn't good enough. Individual tries from Peter Glynn & Neil Holding gave the victory to St Helens and missed goal kicks proving a vital difference.
