Two and half months had passed since Wigan had beat Doncaster in Round 1 of the John Player Trophy and they were not expected to have many problems against Second Division Keighley in Round Two. Having been originally frozen off on the Sunday, the match was played on a cold Wednesday Night with Wigan giving a debut to Nicky Kiss at hooker who would go on to earn a testimonial with a 260 game career for the club over the next eleven years. The result though was a shock win for Keighley that sent Wigan crashing out.
