This cup tie turned to farce because Wigan's First Team Players continued to be on strike over a bonus payment for the John Player Trophy tie win over New Hunslet. Wigan chairman Ken Broome had upped the bonus offer from £55 to £70 but the players were holding out for £75. Broome described the situation as "bordering on ridiculous", adding that: "Even if all our players walked in now dressed up, we still wouldn't play them (at Widnes). "It's beyond money now, it's become a question of whether the players are going to run the club or we are." Inevitably Widnes had easy progressed into the Semi Finals against this Wigan "A" Team.
