A tough draw for Wigan in the First Round of the Floodlit Trophy saw them travelling to Widnes. Wigan had kept Widnes in check early on to lead 5-0 early in the second half with George Fairbairn kicking two penalty goals and a drop goal. But just after the hour, Widnes began to find control with tries from David Jenkins, Eric Hughes and Derek George taking them into a 13-7 lead. 16 minutes remained and it looked like Widnes would kick on to progress easily but a converted try scored by David Hill brought Wigan back to 13-12 and then with two minutes to go, Fairbairn kicked a penalty that sent Wigan through to the next round.
