The Lancashire Cup draw was not kind on Wigan who drew Saints in a match that would open up the 1976-1977 season. But it turned out to be a good draw because Saints First Team Players went on strike over pay conditions and thus Saints were reduced to playing reserves in this contest. That decision did not stop the BBC turning up to televise the Second Half during "Grandstand" and in fairness the Saints competed well first half, in which Wigan only led 9-2 at the break. But afterwards they capitulated with Green Vigo eventually scoring seven tries to equal the then record for most tries in a match for Wigan with 7 tries, a record held jointly by Johnny Ring, Gordon Ratcliffe & Billy Boston.
