This was a match between the top two in the First
Division but Saints began the game six points clear of everyone else and
were looking far superior to all comers. They proved it in this derby
against a Wigan side described as "bitterly disappointing". Wigan
competed well first half but fell away after Bill Francis
was sent off in the 53rd Minute for a late tackle on Geoff Pimblett. Wigan's
only try by George Fairbairn came late in the contest and furthermore
Wigan's Geoff Fletcher and Saints' David Eckersley had been sent off after
the final hooter for fighting. Referee Alec Givvons said he hadn't heard the
hooter but that didn't make any difference to his decision. The result saw
Wigan drop down to fifth.
