Second Division Swinton had already knocked Wigan out of the Lancashire Cup and were looking for a double here in the Players Trophy. The afternoon looked ominous for Wigan from the off when Colin Clarke was sent off for disputing a penalty after just six minutes. Despite that Wigan had taken the lead with a John Gray penalty but one in reply from Ken Hindley made it 2-2 before half time. Late in the first half had also seen the numbers on the field level up with Swinton's Butler getting marching orders for interfering in a tackle on David Hill. The 2-2 deadlock held until the 56th Minute when Graham Evans scored a superb try under the posts for 7-2 with Hindley having an easy conversion and then a drop goal for 8-2. Wigan never recovered from that score and further tries to Bob Fleay and Tommy Young, both converted by Hindley, completed in what the end was an 18-2 rout. Wigan for the second match in a row had capitulated late in the game.
