The league was being split into two divisions at the end of this particular season and Wigan had to finish in the "Top 16" to not only survive relegation but also to qualify for the play offs. Wigan were sweating on the cusp on this but in winning well on Good Friday they rose to 12th placed and ensured survival and play off qualification. It was a tighter game than the end score suggests though with Wigan only leading 4-2 after 50 minutes. Even when Laurie Hinchcliffe scored to make it 7-2, Saints were only a converted try in arrears but Warren Ayres' try sealed the match in which Peter Smethurst was singled out for much praise.
