St Helens were cup holders but went out miserably here.
Wigan had endured early Saints pressure before tries from Dougie Laughton
and Laurie Hinchcliffe had put Wigan 8-0 up by half time with Bill Ashurst
converting one of those tries. Soon after half time that lead was increased
to 13-0 after Stuart Wright scored an absolute blinder and Jimmy Nulty
converted. Saints were clutching at straws reducing that lead to 13-2 with a
penalty goal from Coslett because they made no further impact on the
scoreboard. A penalty from Nulty finished off a good 15-2 win for Wigan.
