Summary:
Although the actual Champions would be decided by play
off, the RFL had introduced a league leaders shield that Wigan needed just 1
point from their final three games to win. At Christmas Wigan had inflicted Saints first home defeat
of the season and with this loss here, Saints returned the favour. In fact
it was Wigan's first home loss since a defeat to Leeds in January 1970. The
difference in the end was slender to the fact that Saints found the only try
of the game in the first half from Johnny Walsh. The only score after the
break was a drop goal from Billy Benyon.
