Summary:
This was already the fourth meeting of the season between
St Helens and Wigan but whilst Wigan had won all 16 league matches so far in
the season, they had lost to St Helens in both the Lancashire Cup and BBC
Floodlit T|rophy. So Wigan would have been grateful to win this, whilst also
inflicting Saints first home defeat of the campaign.. Wigan had a wind advantage in the first half and used it well to
build up a 10-2 lead with tries scored by Colin Tyrer and Bill Ashurst. In
the second half Ashurst kicked a drop goal for a 12-2 lead and that was a
crucial score in the end with Saints still needing two tries after Les Jones
had got one back.
