Summary:

In the BBC Floodlit Trophy Final the two sides had played on December 17th, Brian Hogan had been sent off for St Helens in an "almighty fight" with Bill Ashurst. Despite that and his inevitable suspension, four days later he transferred to Wigan and although he made his Wigan debut before the suspension hit, this was his return match from that ban. It was not a great return because Hogan was sent off again, this time in the 18th minute for head butting his former team mate Cliff Watson. Despite the red card, Wigan had done well to keep Saints down to 3-0 at the break but the extra man advantage proved too much of an advantage for Saints after the interval.
