Summary:

A tight score in the end but Wigan had been dreadful first half and left themselves with far too much to do. Saints were pulling out the pipe and slippers and smoking the cigars with a 16-4 half time lead but Wigan rallied after the interval. A break from David Hill was finished by Tyrer for 16-9 before a great run by Bill Francis had the score at 16-14. Tyrer then kicked a penalty go have it 16-16 on the hour and all the momentum was with Wigan. However it was St Helens who prevailed with a try to win it five minutes from time.
