Summary:

Wigan had knocked Leeds out of the cup in five or the last nine seasons whilst also being unbeaten in six Challenge Cup Semi Finals they had played at Swinton since the war. 30,329 were in attendance to see that form turned on it's head with Leeds, the league leaders, trashing Wigan and pretty much ending the long standing era of Billy Boston and Eric Ashton. They still had some hope in the league but reality would prove this to be the last waltz for that long standing formidable partnership. In sunny conditions, Wigan did kick 2-0 ahead with a 12th Minute Colin Tyrer penalty but Risman soon made it 2-2 with one of this own and Leeds forged ahead from there. A crucial moment came on the half hour when Boston attempted but missed an interception opportunity and Atkinson scored instead for Leeds. That put Leeds 7-2 up and further irony came when they scored an interception try when Watson went under the posts for 12-2. Tyrer kicked a goal for 12-4 but it was not the right choice with Leeds scoring twice more through Ramsey and Hynes to stretch that led to 20-4. Wigan had little hope and Leeds scored again through Seabourne to send them to what would become the famous Watersplash final against Wakefield at Wembley,.
