Leigh had beaten Wigan in the league earlier in the season at Hilton Park and also in the BBC Floodlit Trophy Semi Finals but for this Challenge Cup tie they were without Alex Murphy and that left them described as "like a clock without the spring". A fourth minute try from Bill Francis started the scoring for Wigan and two goals from Colin Tyrer saw a 7-0 lead in 13 minutes. Ex Wigan Laurie Gilfedder kicked a penalty for Leigh to make it 7-2 four minutes later and that gave Leigh some impetus as the score carried to half time and into the second half. However two tries in quick succession  from first Geoff Lyon on 52 Minutes then Peter Rowe on 57 Minutes took the score to 15-2. Wigan added a fourth try from substitute Danny Gardiner late on to complete the victory.
